TP-Link Extender Setup
Setup & troubleshoot guide for TP-Link RE200, RE305, RE450, RE650 and AX series WiFi extenders.
Step-by-Step Setup
- 1
Plug in next to your router
Place the extender close to the router for setup. The Power LED should turn solid.
- 2
Join TP-Link_Extender
Connect your phone/laptop to the open WiFi 'TP-Link_Extender' or scan QR on box.
- 3
Open tplinkrepeater.net
Visit http://tplinkrepeater.net. New users will be asked to create an admin password.
- 4
Scan & select host network
The wizard scans for your router. Pick its 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks and enter passwords.
- 5
Set extended SSID
Use the default (host name + _EXT) or copy host SSID for OneMesh roaming.
- 6
Relocate the extender
Move it halfway to your dead zone. Signal LED should be blue (3 bars). Red = too far.
Common Issues & Fixes
tplinkrepeater.net won't open
Use http:// (not https://). Try the IP 192.168.0.254. Disable cellular data on phones.
Signal LED is red
Move extender closer to the router until the LED turns blue.
5 GHz network missing
Some single-band models only extend 2.4 GHz. Check your model spec.
Stuck at 'Searching for router…'
Reboot the host router first, then re-run the wizard.
Forgot admin password
Hold Reset for 5+ seconds with a pin. All LEDs blink, then reconfigure from scratch.
Tether app can't find extender
Ensure phone is on the TP-Link_Extender SSID, not mobile data. Update Tether app.
Pro Tips
- →Enable OneMesh on compatible TP-Link routers for true seamless roaming.
- →Use the Tether mobile app for fastest setup — same features as the web UI.
- →Position the extender on a power outlet ~10 feet above floor for best line-of-sight.
- →Disable High-Speed Mode if you have many low-bandwidth IoT devices.
